Coming from n8n?

n8n offers a node canvas and AI-assisted workflow building. Whenever turns a plain-language description into one procedure you supervise through summaries and sample results; reading TypeScript is optional. Both can run fixed logic without a model choosing each step. Optional AI steps and changing external data can change outputs. The file is yours; free AI building has weekly limits.

What you get on Whenever

  • Describe it, get TypeScript

Describe the job and AI writes the procedure. n8n also offers an AI Workflow Builder and code nodes; compare how clearly you can review the rules, edge cases and outputs rather than assuming the canvas cannot express them.

  • Hosted by Whenever

Whenever runs published workflows and manages their credentials; published runs are metered. n8n offers hosted plans too, and a self-hosted edition; its self-hosted Business plan also lists an execution allowance.

  • TypeScript you keep

What you keep is readable TypeScript you can export and hand to a developer. AI building and editing are free within weekly usage limits; published runs are metered separately.

A concrete decision

Illustrative scenarios, not customer results or recorded runs.

  • Greg: no “done” without the invoice receipt

Illustrative decision, not a recorded customer run: Greg wants each paid order checked against Stripe, then an invoice created, its ID saved, and only then a confirmation sent. He specifies that an invoice failure must stop the confirmation, and an already-handled order must not be charged or invoiced again. He checks the summary, sample records, provider receipts and run history—not source code. Test a missing payment, a failed invoice and a duplicate event before publishing. Whenever fits when those prescribed steps matter more than an agent deciding them again; a fixed workflow elsewhere can fit too. No screenshot here claims these actions were actually delivered.

  • Jaunius: make the edge cases explicit

Illustrative decision, not a benchmark: Jaunius needs all pages of 5,000 contacts, a saved last-seen ID, updates only for changed records and a clear record of which writes failed. He brings the old workflow and sample inputs, reconnects accounts, and tests pagination, an API failure and a repeated event before switching triggers. Choose a single procedure if it makes this logic easier to maintain; the other tools can also support complex logic. An optional model that classifies a note can vary and adds runtime AI usage. Compare the monthly subscription and actual usage, not the number of steps alone.

Both meter a whole workflow run.

Both can meter whole workflow executions; n8n also offers hosted plans and AI-assisted building. Compare the workflow you want to supervise, not a universal price or ease advantage.

Execution volume

One execution per workflow run

n8n Cloud and paid self-hosted plans list execution allowances; deployment and plan terms differ.

Both products can meter whole workflow executions rather than individual steps. This page does not quote n8n list prices or convert currencies: the units are not a promise of a lower bill. Both offer AI-assisted authoring; compare the workflow representation and deployment you want to maintain.

A run is one execution of one workflow, start to finish. AI building and editing are free within weekly usage limits; runs are metered separately.

A closer look

What changes when you describe the job in plain language and code runs it: to build, to run, and to keep.

Repeatable execution logic

n8n

n8n documents configured branches, loops, waits and code, as well as AI-assisted workflow construction. Our comparison distinguishes configured logic from model-generated decisions; it is not a measured guarantee of identical n8n outputs.

Whenever

AI writes it, then published code runs the same execution logic. With identical inputs and dependencies, non-AI logic is deterministic. Changing API data, time, randomness or an optional model step can change results; this is not an exactly-once delivery guarantee.

Runs per dollar

n8n

n8n Cloud plans meter workflow executions, and its self-hosted Business plan also lists an execution allowance. n8n also publishes a self-hosted Community Edition; if you host n8n yourself, it runs on your own infrastructure.

Whenever

Pro includes 10,000 runs per month; see the pricing page for current US dollar prices. AI building and editing are free within weekly usage limits. Published runs are metered separately: the meter counts the whole run, not individual steps. External services and optional model calls can have their own charges.

What you can express

n8n

n8n offers a node canvas, expressions and code nodes. Its AI Workflow Builder can help create and refine workflows; natural-language assistance is not unique to Whenever.

Whenever

Describe the job in plain language: match payments to orders, fetch every page of contacts, or alert only on unseen reviews. AI writes the procedure; you supervise its rules and results, and reading code is optional. API access still needs suitable permissions and a service reachable from the hosted runtime.

Export and portability

n8n

n8n exports and imports workflow JSON. That is a workflow definition for n8n, not a promise of drop-in execution on another runtime.

Whenever

The TypeScript is yours: read it, edit it, export it, take it with you. Moving it to another runtime can require adapting managed connections, triggers and runtime-specific integrations.

Debugging a failed run

n8n

n8n documents copying an execution into the editor and pinning its data for debugging. Its docs list this for all n8n Cloud plans and for registered Community, Business and Enterprise self-hosted plans.

Whenever

Check the summary, execution log and sample outcomes, then ask for a correction in chat. Inspect TypeScript if useful; use safe inputs when testing external writes again.

Where the AI cost lands

n8n

n8n’s AI Workflow Builder can create and refine workflows, and n8n plans include agent and AI nodes for workflows. Check how the AI steps you plan to use are billed.

Whenever

AI writes the workflow once, with free building subject to weekly AI usage limits. A published procedure runs its steps without a model choosing them. Any model call you explicitly include still runs and has its own cost.

When a prebuilt action is not enough

n8n

Compare the nodes, HTTP requests and code your workflow needs, including the parts its AI builder can help assemble. A code node is an extension mechanism, not proof that the job is impossible.

Whenever

Describe the API operation and provide its documentation. Access depends on the API, account permissions, provider plan and reachability from the hosted runtime; workflow execution and call budgets still apply.

Sources and scope

Official sources captured on the date shown below. These describe published features and billing rules, not independent performance tests. Check the linked documentation for current modes, plans and limits. No competitor dollar price is asserted.

Questions people ask before switching

Why do people look for an n8n alternative?

Consider an alternative if supervising the job through business rules and sample outputs suits you better than maintaining a node graph. n8n also offers hosted execution and AI-assisted building; neither hosting nor chat-based edits alone is a unique advantage.

Can I bring my n8n workflows over?

One at a time, by describing them. Say what the workflow does in plain language and Whenever writes it again as TypeScript; there is no importer for n8n’s graph JSON. Test the new version against real inputs, then switch the old one off.

Is Whenever cheaper than n8n?

Not as a rule. n8n Cloud plans meter executions, its self-hosted Business plan lists an execution allowance, and n8n also publishes a self-hosted Community Edition. Whenever Pro includes 10,000 runs per month, with free AI building subject to weekly limits. Compare the actual plan, optional runtime AI and operating costs; a matching unit does not prove a lower bill.

Do I have to read the TypeScript?

Only when you want to. You describe the automation and test what it does before it runs. The file is there for the day you want to diff it, export it or hand it to a developer.

Start with one n8n workflow.

Describe an automation you already run. Whenever turns it into tested, running code.

  1. Bring the workflow

Describe the job your n8n workflow does, or paste its exported JSON as a reference. Whenever rebuilds it as code rather than importing it.

  2. Review the rules and sample results

Check what the workflow should do and test representative records; TypeScript inspection is optional.

  3. Give it a test run

Check it against real inputs, then publish it on your trigger.
