Otter.ai on Whenever

About Otter.ai

Otter.ai MCP lets agents retrieve the authenticated user's profile, search authorized meetings and conversations, and fetch complete transcripts for analysis and summarization.

How Whenever connects

Through its MCP server, where the available tools and permissions support the job.

Build it from your AI client

Connect Claude, Cursor or Codex to the Whenever MCP server and your coding agent can build and deploy the Otter.ai workflow. It runs on Whenever afterwards, on its schedule or webhook, with the chat closed.

Plan your Otter.ai workflow

Otter.ai records and transcribes meetings; its MCP server lets a connected tool search those meetings and read them. Whenever reaches Otter only through that MCP connection at mcp.otter.ai/mcp, signed in with an Otter account through OAuth. Otter documents three tools: get user info, which returns the connected user’s name and email; search, which finds meetings and returns an overview; and fetch, which retrieves the full transcript of a meeting or conversation. None of them create, edit or delete anything in Otter, so a workflow’s output goes elsewhere: a document, a sheet, an email.

The connection sees what the connected Otter user sees. Otter says that covers meetings the user captured and meetings shared with them by others in their Workspace. Fetching a conversation by its Otter URL only works if that conversation has been shared with the account. If a sales lead wants a weekly digest of the whole team’s customer calls, the calls need to be shared with the connecting account, through conversation sharing or channels, before any automation can read them.

There is no event to start from. Otter states it does not offer a public API key, and its MCP tools are request-based, so Whenever cannot be told when a meeting ends. Workflows run on a schedule: search a date range or topic, fetch the transcripts found, then summarise or extract. A scheduled run starts even on a day with no meetings, so make the empty case quiet. Keep a record of the conversations already processed, because a search over the same week returns the same meetings again.

Transcripts are long and often contain things people said in confidence. Keep summaries in a destination whose readers would have been welcome in the meeting, and don’t paste whole transcripts into shared channels. AI summaries vary from run to run and can miss nuance; ask for short quotes alongside each decision or action item so a reader can check them against the transcript, and include the Otter link for anyone who needs the full context.

Otter.ai FAQs

Does Otter.ai have a public API for automation?

Otter says it does not currently offer a public API key. Programmatic access is through its MCP server, which provides search, fetch and get-user-info tools after OAuth sign-in.

Which meetings can the Otter MCP connection read?

Meetings the connected user captured in Otter and meetings shared with them by others in their Workspace. To cover a team’s calls, share them with the account used for the connection.

Can a workflow start when an Otter meeting ends?

Otter’s MCP tools do not include a notification or event, so there is nothing to trigger on. Run the workflow on a schedule and search the period since the last run.

Why can’t fetch open an Otter conversation link?

Otter requires the conversation to be shared with the connected account before it can be retrieved by URL. Ask the owner to share it, or add it to a channel the account belongs to.

Can Whenever write summaries back into Otter?

Not through the documented tools, which only retrieve profile, search results and transcripts. Send summaries to a document, spreadsheet or email instead.
