n8n alternatives

n8n alternatives, and who each one suits

Compare alternatives when a different authoring or hosting model would fit your job better. n8n supports AI-assisted building and hosted or self-hosted deployment; paid self-hosted plans can still meter executions. These are suggested fits, not evidence of why customers leave or which product is universally easier.

Questions to ask before switching

Which workflow is easier to maintain?

n8n supports nodes, expressions, code and AI-assisted building. Illustrative, not a recorded run: Jaunius needs all pages of 5,000 contacts and only changed records written back. Try pagination, a repeated event and an API failure in each candidate before choosing the representation you prefer.

Hosted or self-hosted?

n8n Cloud plans are hosted and meter executions. n8n also publishes a self-hosted Community Edition and lists an execution allowance on its self-hosted Business plan; self-hosting keeps n8n on your own infrastructure.

What does the export contain?

n8n exports workflow JSON for import into n8n. That does not promise drop-in execution in a different runtime; inspect runtime and credential dependencies before moving.

Whenever: describe it, AI writes it

You describe the job in plain language and AI writes it as TypeScript. Whenever hosts it, and the file is yours.

Whenever

  • Describe the job in plain words; review the rules and sample results.
  • Hosted by Whenever, with credentials managed for supported connections.
  • Priced per run like n8n Cloud, so compare how it is built, not the meter.

Activepieces

Billed by

Credits + plan features. AI and run usage, with unlimited flows.

Our suggested fit

An open-source visual flow builder you can also run on premises.

Compare

Pipedream

Billed by

Compute-time credits. Duration and memory, per workflow segment.

Our suggested fit

A few useful answers

What is the best n8n alternative?

Our recommendation is to test the same difficult job in the tools you are considering. Make and Activepieces offer visual and AI-assisted building; Pipedream Workflows is being retired. Whenever offers a procedure you supervise through business rules, sample outputs and run history, with optional code inspection.

Is there a self-hosted n8n alternative?

Activepieces and Dify both publish editions you can run yourself. Whenever is hosted only; what you keep is the workflow’s TypeScript, which you can export.

Is Whenever cheaper than n8n?

Not as a rule. n8n Cloud plans meter executions and its self-hosted Business plan lists an execution allowance; the Community Edition is self-hosted. Compare the actual subscription, runtime AI and operating costs. Both Whenever and n8n Cloud provide hosted execution.

Bring one workflow over

Describe an existing automation and supervise its rules and sample results. Fixed code is deterministic with identical inputs and dependencies; optional AI and changing external data can change outcomes.
