Archive.org integrations and automation

Describe what should happen in Archive.org, and when, in plain words. Whenever builds the workflow and runs it on a schedule, on a webhook, or when another app sends an event.

Connection requirements, provider permissions and optional AI usage apply. Read the runtime limits.

Archive.org on Whenever

About Archive.org

Search and access Internet Archive content, inspect analytics, Wayback captures, IIIF images, and account tasks, and manage item files, metadata, derivation, and the connected user's reviews.

How Whenever connects

Through its API, using the credentials and permissions required by the provider.

Build it from your AI client

Connect Claude, Cursor or Codex to the Whenever MCP server and your coding agent can build and deploy the Archive.org workflow. It runs on Whenever afterwards, on its schedule or webhook, with the chat closed.

Plan your Archive.org workflow

The Internet Archive serves two very different needs through separate interfaces. One is the collection of items — books, audio, video, software and datasets — each identified by a unique identifier and described by metadata. The other is the Wayback Machine, the archive of captured web pages. Automations that mix them up get confusing results, so decide first whether you are working with items or with captures of URLs.

For items, the Advanced Search and Scrape APIs find identifiers by query over metadata fields such as collection, creator, date and mediatype, and the Scrape API pages through large result sets with a cursor. The Metadata API returns an item’s full record and file list, and can also apply edits to metadata for items you have rights to. Uploading files uses the S3-like interface, authenticated with an access key and secret generated in your archive.org account settings; after upload the Archive runs derive tasks to produce formats such as text or thumbnails, which take time to finish.

For the web archive, the Wayback Availability API reports the closest capture of a URL to a given date, and the CDX server lists every capture with timestamps, status codes and content digests, which is how you notice a page actually changed. Requesting a new capture uses Save Page Now, which requires an account and is subject to the Archive’s own pacing; a burst of save requests will be slowed or refused. Comparing digests from CDX is a cheap way to see whether a page changed before asking for anything heavier.

The Archive is a nonprofit service and asks automated clients to be polite: identify yourself, avoid hammering endpoints, and back off when told to. Plan schedules accordingly, cache identifiers you have already processed, and keep large file downloads deliberate.

Archive.org workflow examples

Authored starter briefs to configure with your accounts, not preconfigured workflows.

Snapshot your key pages every week

Requests a Wayback capture of a short URL list and records the archived link for each one.

Detect changes to a competitor’s pricing page

Uses CDX capture digests, so only real content changes trigger a message.

New items in a collection

A scheduled search over one collection that lists only identifiers not seen before.

Archive.org FAQs

How do I get API keys for Internet Archive uploads?

Log in to archive.org and open the S3 API keys page in your account settings. The access key and secret authenticate uploads and metadata changes through the S3-like interface.

What is the difference between the Wayback Availability API and CDX?

Availability returns the single closest capture to a URL and timestamp. CDX lists all captures with timestamps, status codes and digests, and supports filtering and collapsing, which suits change detection.

Why is my uploaded file not showing derived formats yet?

After upload the Archive queues derive tasks that create formats such as OCR text and thumbnails. They run asynchronously, so check the item again later rather than assuming they are ready immediately.

Can Save Page Now be called in a tight loop?

No. Save Page Now is rate-limited and slows or rejects bursts. Space requests out and treat a refusal as a reason to try on a later run.

How do I page through thousands of search results?

Use the Scrape API, which returns a cursor for the next page, instead of increasing the page number on Advanced Search indefinitely.
