OpenClaw vs n8n: which to choose, and a third option

October 16, 2026 · 5 min read

Our take: these solve different problems. OpenClaw is an open-source assistant environment whose scheduled jobs can run agent turns or shell commands; n8n is a node-canvas workflow builder with AI-assisted building, offered as n8n Cloud or self-hosted. Choose by whether the job needs an assistant or a configured workflow.

How each one bills

OpenClaw is MIT-licensed; budget your host, configured provider usage and operating work. n8n Cloud and paid self-hosted plans meter workflow executions. Compare a month of the same work, not executions against hosting bills. No competitor dollar price or measured saving is quoted here.

n8n

Execution volume

One execution per workflow run.

n8n Cloud and paid self-hosted plans list execution allowances; deployment and plan terms differ.

Side by side

The same six questions every comparison on this site answers, with the third column for the option that is neither.

Repeatable execution logic

The payload matters. Agent turns use a model; shell commands can run without one. Headless code-mode scripts and system events are also supported. OpenClaw is not prompt-only automation.

n8n documents configured branches, loops, waits and code, as well as AI-assisted workflow construction. Our comparison distinguishes configured logic from model-generated decisions; it is not a measured guarantee of identical n8n outputs.

AI writes the procedure; published code runs its fixed logic. Optional AI steps can vary, and external data, time or randomness can change results. Fixed logic does not guarantee exactly-once delivery.

Runs per dollar

OpenClaw is MIT-licensed, granted free of charge; budget your host, configured provider usage and operating work. Command payloads run without a model-backed turn, so they need not carry token costs.

n8n Cloud plans meter workflow executions, and its self-hosted Business plan also lists an execution allowance. n8n also publishes a self-hosted Community Edition; if you host n8n yourself, it runs on your own infrastructure.

Pro includes 10,000 runs per month; see the pricing page for current US dollar prices. AI building and editing are free within weekly usage limits. Published runs are metered separately: the meter counts the whole run, not individual steps. External services and optional model calls can have their own charges.

What you can express

A broad assistant environment with tools, channels, host access and scheduled jobs. That flexibility is valuable when the work reaches beyond a bounded API procedure.

n8n offers a node canvas, expressions and code nodes. Its AI Workflow Builder can help create and refine workflows; natural-language assistance is not unique to Whenever.

Describe the rules you already know; AI writes the procedure. Review the summary and sample results, not necessarily the code. Keep an explicit model step for judgment. Agent platforms may also offer fixed workflows or scripts; compare the mode you actually use.

Export and portability

MIT-licensed source and a user-operated Gateway give you real control over the host, workspace and state. OpenClaw’s docs advise backing up the state and workspace regularly.

n8n exports and imports workflow JSON. That is a workflow definition for n8n, not a promise of drop-in execution on another runtime.

The TypeScript is yours: read it, edit it, export it, take it with you. Moving it to another runtime can require adapting managed connections, triggers and runtime-specific integrations.

Debugging a failed run

Inspect the Gateway, job configuration and host environment as well as the chosen command or agent payload. A broken script and a poor model decision are different problems.

n8n documents copying an execution into the editor and pinning its data for debugging. Its docs list this for all n8n Cloud plans and for registered Community, Business and Enterprise self-hosted plans.

Review the procedure and execution log together. Re-test with representative inputs, while accounting for API changes and avoiding duplicate external writes.

Where the AI cost lands

Model-backed jobs consume the selected provider’s tokens. Shell commands have no model call; system events do not call one by themselves. Costs depend on what you configure.

n8n’s AI Workflow Builder can create and refine workflows, and n8n plans include agent and AI nodes for workflows. Check how the AI steps you plan to use are billed.

AI writes the workflow once, with free building subject to weekly AI usage limits. A published procedure runs its steps without a model choosing them. Any model call you explicitly include still runs and has its own cost.

Our recommendation: choose by the job

Pick OpenClaw if

  • The job needs an assistant with tools, channels and host access.

  • You want MIT-licensed source and control over the host and state.

  • Some jobs are plain shell commands that need no model.

Pick n8n if

  • You want to see the workflow as a node canvas, with code nodes where needed.

  • You want hosted plans, or a self-hosted edition, that meter executions.

  • You want to export and import the workflow as JSON.

Or a third option: Whenever

An agent that writes the workflow, a runtime that hosts it: your coding agent or Whenever’s builder writes TypeScript, and Whenever triggers and runs it.

Hosted for you

Whenever runs published workflows for you, with managed credentials for supported connections and stored secrets for other APIs. Complete account setup and review permissions.

A model only where a step asks

Fixed steps run as code without a model call. A step that needs judgment can still call one, and that step can vary.

A workflow file you keep

Whenever leaves you a readable workflow file. Compare the other tools’ export formats and account data separately; moving managed connections and runtime dependencies still takes work.

A few useful answers

Is OpenClaw a replacement for n8n?

Not as a rule. OpenClaw is an assistant environment you operate; n8n is a workflow builder. Test the same job in both and choose the one your team can supervise.

Can either run a job without a model call?

Yes. OpenClaw shell-command payloads run without a model-backed turn, and n8n runs configured branches, loops and code. Whenever workflows call a model only in a step that asks for one.
