ChatGPT scheduled tasks: what they do and their limits
October 17, 2026 · 2 min read
ChatGPT can run one-time or recurring tasks, monitor for changes and respond to supported app events. When the job is a fixed procedure that writes to your business tools, Whenever runs it as a workflow instead: reviewed code on a schedule or webhook, with a record of every run.
AI steps have no same-output guarantee and incur runtime AI usage when they run. Code-only steps keep following the rules you approve.
* APIs and MCP servers must be reachable from Whenever’s hosted runtime. Required credentials, permissions and provider plans still apply; private-network-only services are not automatically accessible.
From a ChatGPT task to a deployed workflow
Keep the instructions; give them a runtime.
Pick the task that repeats
Find
Its schedule or app event, and what it does each time it runs.
Let your coding agent rewrite it
Refactor
It follows whenever.dev/skill.md and saves a draft over MCP. Or describe the job in plain words and AI builds it.

One trigger, one run, every step recorded.
How ChatGPT scheduled tasks work
From OpenAI’s help article on scheduled tasks.
A schedule or an app event
A task runs at a chosen time, or responds to supported Gmail, Slack or GitHub activity as an event-triggered task in Work.
A cap on active tasks
3 for Free and Go, 5 for Plus, 10 for Business and Edu, and 15 for Pro and Enterprise.
Hourly needs a paid plan
Free tasks run at most once a day; hourly schedules and exact delivery times require an eligible paid plan.
Approvals can pause it
Actions that require approval may pause the task.
A ChatGPT task, or a workflow?
Deploy a workflow when
It writes to business tools through APIs or webhooks
Its steps are the same each run
A team needs a run history it can read
Keep it in ChatGPT when
You want a reminder or a one-time check
It monitors for changes and lets you know
It responds to the Gmail, Slack or GitHub activity ChatGPT supports
A few useful answers
How many scheduled tasks can ChatGPT run?
Active task limits depend on the plan: 3 for Free and Go, 5 for Plus, 10 for Business and Edu, and 15 for Pro and Enterprise.
Can ChatGPT tasks respond to events?
Yes. Event-triggered tasks run in Work and respond to supported Gmail, Slack or GitHub activity, for eligible users on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu plans.
Can my coding agent turn a ChatGPT task into a workflow?
Yes. Give it the task’s instructions and schedule and point it at whenever.dev/skill.md. It writes a workflow module and saves a draft; you enter credentials in Setup and publish.
