Make vs Zapier: billing, building and export
October 12, 2026 · 5 min read
Our take: compare how your team prefers to inspect the workflow and which integrations cover the job. Make and Zapier both offer AI-assisted building. Make uses credits; Zapier uses tasks with exemptions and variable rates. A lower unit count does not establish a lower dollar bill.
How each one bills
Compare dollar budgets for the same successful workload, frequency and billing period: subscription plus any usage beyond its allowance, runtime AI and external provider charges. Make trigger checks can consume credits, including empty polling checks; Zapier triggers use no tasks. Include those differences, bundles, exemptions and variable action rates in the budget. Fewer billing units do not establish a cheaper workload. No competitor dollar price or measured saving is quoted here.
Make
Operation-based credits
Scenario usage, AI-agent chat and Maia usage.
Ordinary non-AI operations normally use one credit; AI and advanced features can have variable rates, and Maia consumes credits from the same pool.
Zapier
Task-based billing
Successful action usage, with exceptions and variable rates.
The detailed task-usage documentation exempts triggers, filters and listed built-ins, despite broader wording on the pricing page. Use the action-specific rules and confirm current billing.
Side by side
The same six questions every comparison on this site answers, with the third column for the option that is neither.
| Make | Zapier | Whenever |
|---|---|---|---|
Repeatable execution logic | Scenarios run the modules you configure; a router splits the flow into routes, and filters add conditions to each route. AI apps and Make AI Agents are modules you add where you want them. | Configured Zap steps follow the workflow you build, and AI steps use the model tier you choose. Changes in external data also affect results. | AI writes the procedure; published code runs its fixed logic. Optional AI steps can vary, and external data, time or randomness can change results. Fixed logic does not guarantee exactly-once delivery. |
Runs per dollar | Make bills in credits. Most non-AI operations consume one credit, while some features depend on tokens, processing time, pages or file size. The work performed inside the scenario matters. | Price your actual Zap in dollars, including its plan allowance and any applicable extra usage. Triggers and some built-ins do not consume tasks; AI, code and connector rates can vary. A task count is not a workflow-run price. | Pro includes 10,000 runs per month; see the pricing page for current US dollar prices. AI building and editing are free within weekly usage limits. Published runs are metered separately: the meter counts the whole run, not individual steps. External services and optional model calls can have their own charges. |
What you can express | Make builds scenarios from modules, mapped values, routers and filters on the scenario canvas, and Maia can build and edit scenarios from a prompt. Natural-language authoring alone is not the distinction. | Zaps combine actions, filters, paths and code. Copilot can help build and edit them. Compare the resulting workflow you supervise rather than assuming all Zapier work must be assembled or maintained by hand. | Describe the job in plain language: match payments to orders, fetch every page of contacts, or alert only on unseen reviews. AI writes the procedure; you supervise its rules and results, and reading code is optional. API access still needs suitable permissions and a service reachable from the hosted runtime. |
Export and portability | Make documents JSON blueprints containing modules, settings and mapped values, sharing them with other users, and importing into scenarios or compatible tools. Connections must be recreated; check the destination’s compatibility rather than assuming a universal runtime export. | Zapier documents an account-data export that includes Zapfile.json, an export of your undeleted Zap workflows with each step’s inputs and outputs. Check which integrations and credentials a migration needs. | The TypeScript is yours: read it, edit it, export it, take it with you. Moving it to another runtime can require adapting managed connections, triggers and runtime-specific integrations. |
Debugging a failed run | The visual scenario remains the unit you inspect and maintain. Trace the modules and mapped values, and consider how bundles fan out when reproducing a problem. | Zapier documents selecting a run and its version in Zap history. Its Code documentation describes step input, output and logs; inspect the diagnostics available for the action you use. | Review the execution log, summary and sample outputs; inspect TypeScript if useful. Make also documents history, replay and output bundles, so debugging availability is not the distinction. |
Where the AI cost lands | Not every scenario needs AI. Built-in AI can have variable credit rates; when you supply custom model credentials, provider token charges are separate. | Copilot helps build and edit Zaps. AI model tier, code runtime and connector type each affect how many tasks an action uses. | AI writes the workflow once, with free building subject to weekly AI usage limits. A published procedure runs its steps without a model choosing them. Any model call you explicitly include still runs and has its own cost. |
Our recommendation: choose by the job
Pick Make if
Your automations branch, and seeing the branches on a canvas helps.
Scenarios process lists of items and need routers and filters.
The team wants to see each automation as a scenario on a canvas.
Pick Zapier if
Automations are short: a trigger and a few steps between common apps.
An app you need already has a Zapier integration.
Your team already runs its other automations in Zapier.
Or a third option: Whenever
Example brief: read new orders, group them by fulfilment destination and notify only when a write fails. Compare the same job in Make, Zapier and Whenever; budget each product using its own billing rules rather than treating tasks, credits and runs as equivalent.
One run, however many steps
The meter counts the whole workflow, whether it makes one API call or twenty. Free AI building has weekly usage limits.
Written as TypeScript you can review
Describe the job and Whenever’s AI writes it as TypeScript, including the conditions, repeats and data handling it needs.
TypeScript you can export
The workflow is a TypeScript file you can read and export. Make documents exporting, sharing and importing JSON blueprints, and Zapier’s account-data export includes your Zap workflows; compare the export format, connections and runtime dependencies before moving.
A few useful answers
Is Make better than Zapier?
There is no measured winner here. Our recommendation is to test the same job, including pagination, missing data and a repeated event, and choose the workflow your team can supervise most clearly. AI-assisted authoring is available in these builders.
Is Make cheaper than Zapier?
Unit counts alone cannot answer that. Price a representative month using the applicable plan, included allowance, overage, runtime AI and external provider charges. Keep the same billing period and currency.
Can I move from Zapier to Make?
Treat migration as a rebuild and validation exercise, not a promised direct import. Export what your account supports, record business rules and reconnect credentials. Whenever can write the replacement from your description; test safe examples before switching triggers.
Is there an option between the two?
Whenever offers managed execution on a subscription with a monthly run allowance and separate included runtime AI spend, with AI-written logic you supervise through summaries, samples and run history. Fixed non-AI logic is deterministic under identical inputs and dependencies; optional AI and external state can change outputs and costs.
